Here. Now. Today.

It’s my new mantra.

Too often, we are not in the present.  We’re mining the middens of the past trying to explain away our bad feelings or bad behavior or we’re floating into painful projections of a future more akin to a post-apocalyptic world.

Lately, I’ve been dealing with my anxiety.  Part of my job as a movie producer is to prevent potential problems with production and minimize liabilities as much as possible.  My job is to look at a script and ask myself, “What could go wrong here,” and “Where is there a waste of money or other resources?”

Therefore, as part of being in a leadership position, I do have to put some mind-space in the future and the what-ifs.  People count on me to anticipate and solve problems.  And if I solve a problem that never grows into a full-blown “issue”, all the better!  However, once it makes my heart race or prevents me from moving forward, I’ve started to go to:

 

Here.  Now.  Today.

Here–where I am–the space–my office, the coffee shop, etc.

Now–what am I doing in the now–data entry, memorizing, budgeting

Today–the actual date and time

Here. Now. Today.

I also have to accept there’s enough entropy that I won’t be able to anticipate all the issues.  I recently toured a movie ranch that lost 20 structures in the last California wildfire.  There’s no way anyone could have predicted that specific facility would have lost all those structures–iconic ones.  There are limits to what we can foresee and anticipate, even if we have keen minds and heightened intuition.

If you’re feeling anxious, or are tasked with trying to lead a group, especially projecting the future, know that you can’t project or prognosticate everything.  You can only do the best you can do.

Here, now, today is our greatest point of power.

 

 

 

The Simple Joy of a Bubble Bath

Just a reminder that in 2019, self care doesn’t have to be lavish.  It doesn’t have to be expensive.  It doesn’t have to be hours of your time.  I took a bubble bath last night, and WOW…it did me a world of good.  What was different though, why I am bothering to write about it, is that I approached it in a mindful way.

We have so much stimuli coming at us.  Our mind can’t process it all.  Our minds filter out so much information.  We do things to get them done, to check tasks off the list.  I decided last night the most meditative thing I could do was be fully present in washing off the cares of the day.  I try to begin and end my day with some kind of meditation.

There’s an exercise I do to get present.  It’s especially useful when I’m feeling frantic, hurried or scattered.

Here it is:

I identify five things I can see.

  • the hundreds of bubbles in the water of varying sizes
  • the pink of my bar soap
  • the red of my wash cloth
  • a nearby candle, unlit
  • my facial cleanser

I identify four things I can hear.

  • plumbing sounds
  • tiny pops of bubbles
  • my hand moving through the water
  • footsteps in another part of the house

I identify three things I can touch or feel.

  • the warmth of the water
  • the crunch of the bubbles in my hands as I play with them
  • the coldness of my shoulders, which were not underwater

I identify two things I can smell.

  • the smell of the bubble bath, bright with a hint of charcoal
  • the eucalyptus smell of my cold cream

I identify one thing I can taste.

  • the mint of freshly brushed teeth

This exercise helps me to get really present in what I am doing and sensitizes me to my environment.  It encourages me to observe, not just do for doing’s sake.  We can buy all the self care our wallets can stand, but we must also invest our time and thought.  We must invest our Self in the self care.

Feed Your Body & Your Spirit

So often we lose ourselves in the hustle and bustle and daily routine that we can’t hear that small inner voice that keeps us fresh, creative and ready . To be your best you,  you must honor that voice!

Self Care Ideas:

  1.  Explore a new neighborhood in your city.
  2. Give yourself 10 min away from the computer, turn your phone off, light some incense and just listen.
  3. Give yourself a facial or pedicure.
  4. Float in a pool. Just float.
  5. Buy yourself some flowers.
  6. Color!  There’s so many age-appropriate (aka adult) coloring books now!
  7. Grab some bubbles and blow bubbles.
  8. Dance to your favorite music, without or without friends.
  9. If you have a pet, cuddle with them!
  10. Try yoga nidra. (You’ll thank me!)

Remember, there’s only ONE you.  You are irreplaceable.
